Police: Pregnant woman, baby expected to survive following shooting in Kensington

FOX 29's Lauren Johnson has more on a pregnant woman who was shot in Kensington on Wednesday night.

A pregnant woman and her baby are expected to survive after police say the woman was shot Wednesday night while standing in the doorway of a home in Kensington.

According to police, the 9-months pregnant woman was shot once in the abdomen on the 1800 block of East Atlantic Street around 7:30 p.m. She was taken to Temple University Hospital in critical condition.

Police say the 39-year-old woman underwent an emergency c-section to deliver the baby. The woman and the child are expected to survive, according to authorities.

Investigators believe the woman may have been hit by a stray bullet.

"At this time we can't find any ballistic evidence. We don’t have a description of the shooter or shooters. The family didn’t see anyone fire the shot. They just heard the gunshot so it is possible she was struck by stray gunfire," Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small said.

No arrests have been reported and a weapon has not been recovered.  The investigation is ongoing.
