Police: Woman, Good Samaritan injured during attempted carjacking

Wilmington, Del. (WTXF) - Police say a man armed with a knife tried to carjack a woman in the parking lot even going after a Good Samaritan stepped in.

It happened at the ShopRite on South Walnut in Wilmington just after 6 p.m. Wednesday.

The man, allegedly wielding a knife, pulled open the driver's side door and tried to enter the vehicle, grabbing the 32-year-old woman's keys and attempted to start her car, investigators stated.

The victim was seated in the passenger side front seat. She was able to get out and run with her attacker coming after her, police say. She suffered knife wounds and the scare of her life.

Management of the ShopRite declined comment.

Some patrons say they feel safe shopping in this strip mall of several stores. But the details of the crime give them pause. Especially when hearing that a 67-year-old man, who came to the woman's aid, was chased and cut on the hand.

Creatha Jones, a patron of ShopRite says, "Still surprised by that--wouldn't think there would be somebody like that in this area. Somebody in desperate need. People they just take from people instead of getting their own. That's what bothers me. I've never had a problem here."

Another patron, Denise Thomas, says "I'll be more careful when I do come here. I'll tell the family to be more careful, but that won't keep me from coming here."

Mary Brokenbrough says, "There is usually always somebody in the parking lot. Doing the carts or doing something. I've never had a problem been coming here for years."
