LAKEWOOD, N.J. - Authorities say a suspect has been arrested in the deaths of two people at a New Jersey apartment complex over the weekend.
The Ocean County prosecutor’s office said Sunday that Lakewood Township police and the county sheriff’s office crime scene investigation unit are taking part in the investigation of "what appears to be a double homicide that occurred earlier this morning."
Tyshaun Drummond, 39, of Toms River, was charged with two counts of murder in connection with the deaths of Nicholas Hardy, 36, of Toms River, and Sergio Chavez-Perez, 32, of Lakewood.
"The deaths of these two men are senseless and tragic. The responding Lakewood Township Police Officers should be commended for their bravery and their use of less than lethal force in taking Drummond into custody. They prevented a bad situation from getting worse," Prosecutor Bradley Billhimer stated.
The prosecutors said a suspect was in custody. Capt. Greg Staffordsmith, a police spokesman, told NJ.com that the two people were killed at the Brettwood apartments.
