Security guard shot when man, woman fight at grocery

An early morning confrontation at a Germantown grocery store ended with an innocent security guard shot.

Police say shortly after 6am Monday, they found the 24-year-old man wounded in his right shin at the Save-a-Lot in the 5800 block of Pulaski Avenue. He was taken to the hospital and treated.

According to the preliminary investigation, a 51-year-old woman said a man tried to block her from getting into the store.

She reported after a screaming match, the man "charged at her with a large stick and attempted to strike her; the male also threw hot coffee at her."

That's when police say she "drew her revolver and fired two shots at the male."

She didn't hit him.

Instead, according to police, "It is believed that the first shot ricocheted from the ground" and hit the security guard.

The man who allegedly caused the trouble got away with her purse and cell phone but police say they found him on Rittenhouse Street with the stick and purse, and arrested him.

They say he's a 45-year-old man and they'll release his name once he's processed.

As for the woman, police said she has a valid permit to carry her gun.
