SEPTA to phase out tokens at subway stations
PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Transit officials in Philadelphia say they will begin phasing out sales of tokens at subway stations next month.
SEPTA says token sales will be phased out at cashier's booths and vending machines at stations on the Market-Frankford and Broad Street lines starting in mid-January.
Tokens will continue to be sold until further notice at major SEPTA sale offices, regional rail stations and at more than 200 third-party retailers.
SEPTA says the move is part of its fare modernization project. Earlier this year, SEPTA ended sales of "legacy" magnetic strip TransPasses at sales offices and says most of those customers have moved to reloadable SEPTA Key Cards.
