Suspect in police custody following Phoenixville shooting

Police say a man was taken into custody in connection with a shooting in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania late Thursday night.

21-year-old Keyon Carpenter was wanted in the shooting death of Joshua Mitchell, 20, after a shooting near Bank Street and Bridge Street around 9:45 p.m. Thursday. He was taken into custody without incident Friday afternoon.

Officers responded to the scene for a report of a shooting and arrived on scene to find Mitchell suffering from a single gunshot wound to the upper body.

Mitchell was taken to Phoenixville Hospital where he later died.

Eyewitnesses identified Carpenter as the shooter and told police the two men had been involved in an argument when Carpenter pulled out a handgun and fired one shot at the victim and witnesses. Investigators say that shot did not hit anyone.

Witnesses told police Carpenter then chased after Mitchell and shot him in the upper body, before fleeing the scene on foot.

Investigators say the gun used in the incident had previously been reported stolen and there was an attempt to destroy the serial number on the gun.
