PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Gnats!
The Philadelphia police department and other agencies in the suburbs were kept busy with calls reporting swarms of gnats which, experts say, are actually flying ants.
The reports Monday are a result of the insects mating, a one-day, once-a-year occurrence.
There were reports of seeing the bugs around the Northeast Philadelphia Airport, Center City, South Philadelphia, Montgomery County and beyond.
FOX 29 viewers started to spot the bugs around 7 p.m. Monday.
FOX 29 reached out to the Academy of Natural Sciences we have not heard back at this time. According to FOX 29 Kathy Orr, it's mating season for gnats and what many saw were 'gnat clouds.'
Philly 311 tweeted, "On the do-to-list: Add the option for how to deal with swarms of bugs in Philadelphia as a service request for our citizens."
Philadelphia police addressed the bugs on their Twitter as well.
