NORTHEAST PHILADELPHIA (WTXF) - A Philadelphia police officer is in the hospital after he was assaulted in Northeast Philadelphia, early Monday morning, and a teenager with braces is under arrest. That teen is also suspected in an armed robbery just over 24 hours before.
Police say the assault happened just before 4:30am outside a credit union in the 12400 block of Academy Road.
The officer responded to a report of a person in the parking lot with a gun. The 20-year veteran officer got out of his car and saw a teenager matching the description, and tried to stop and frisk him.
He also realized the teen wearing braces fit the unusual description of the suspect who robbed a 7-Eleven at 2am Sunday about a half-block away, at Academy and Byberry roads.
Police say when the officer approached, the teen struggled violently with him, picked the officer up and body-slammed him to the ground. The officer hit his head and temporarily lost consciousness.
He suffered a laceration to the back of his head and was taken to the hospital.
He's in stable condition.
About 20 minutes later, the suspect was found hiding behind a nearby business and arrested. He was taken to the hospital where the officer identified him.
Ballistics and canine officers are searching for the gun.
Police say the suspect will be charged in the assault, which was probably caught on surveillance -- and investigated in connection with the armed robbery, which was caught on camera.
