Two teens die after prom night car accident
MORRIS RIVER TOWNSHIP, NJ (WTXF) - The sound of rustling balloons could be heard off mile marker 41.8 on Route 49 in Maurice River township, NJ, Monday.
They were part of a growing memorial to two teens killed in a late-night car crash following the Bridgeton high school prom Friday night.
"My heart just sank," said a family friend, Tameka Turner, as she visited the memorial during her lunch break.
17-year-old Daisia Sulton, a junior at the high school, and 15-year-old Mikayla Mosley, a sophomore, died when the P/T Cruiser driven by Sulton failed to handle a curve, left the road and rammed a tree around 3:45am Saturday.
Two other students-- also passengers in the vehicle-- were badly hurt.
Bridgeton schools superintendent Dt. Thomasina Jones described the mood in school Monday as "melancholy, bleak and somber."
Classmates described the crash victims as good students and good kids.
"Always made sure everybody else was good, before themselves," said sophomore Saheed Grandison.
The crash victims had reportedly visited friends after the prom Friday night, and were driving back from Ocean City when the crash occurred.
Dr. Jones said Bridgeton does not have an official "post prom" event to keep students inside and chaperoned in the hours following the big dance. But she told Fox 29's Bruce Gordon she was considering planning one for next year.
