PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (WTXF) - Hundreds gathered on 12th and Ritner in South Philadelphia to pray for the two 16-year-olds shot and killed on the corner just 24-hours earlier.
Police are only saying two groups of teenagers got into some argument. Shortly after three shots were fired from a .45-caliber handgun and the crowd scattered, according to police.
16-year-old St. Joseph's Preparatory School student Salvatore DiNubile and 16-year-old Mastery Charter School student Caleer Miller were shot and killed.
"That's him, he's a cool dude, quiet, carried himself as a decent young man," a neighbor said while talking about Miller. This neighbor says Miller's Facebook photos captured his personality.
Two teens both described as smart died minutes after they were shot.
"We don't have the reason behind the argument. We have two tragedies," Philadelphia Police Captain John Kelly said.
Owen Kelly had been a classmate and hockey teammate with "Sal" since 2nd grade.
"Kinda street smart and school smart-- good at hockey," he said.
So far, no arrests have been made.
St. Joseph's Preparatory School released the following statement regarding Sal DiNubile's passing:
The entire St. Joseph's Prep community is shaken and terribly saddened by Sal's tragic death. He was well-loved by his Prep brothers, his hockey teammates and all who knew him. Our thoughts and prayers are with Sal's family and friends at this terrible time.
Counselors and other faculty are available to assist and support our students, especially our junior class and hockey team. Mass in his memory was celebrated this morning in the Church of the Gesu.
Mastery Charter Schools released the following statement regarding Caleer Miller's passing:
Mastery Charis deeply saddened and heartbroken by the loss of Caleer Miller. Caleer was a junior at our Thomas Campus. Although he'd only been a Thomas student for just one month, he was starting to make friends and was very engaged in class. He also worked in the neighborhood and was active in his church and the YMCA. As we cope with the loss, we are offering counseling and support to students and staff. Our thoughts and prayers are with Caleer's family.
