Philadelphia surpasses 300 homicides in 2021 after violent night

After another night of deadly gun violence, Philadelphia has now recorded more than 300 homicides so far in the year 2021.

Shootings and stabbings around the city of Philadelphia over the weekend claimed at least four lives and sent a couple of dozen people to hospitals, including a 1-year-old boy hit by gunfire in his mother's arms in a convenience store during a gunbattle.

Police said the occupants of a vehicle driving by fired into the west Philadelphia store at about 8 p.m. Saturday, and two people inside returned fire. One of them was injured. The boy was taken to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and listed in stable condition with a gunshot wound to the leg.

The woman was holding the child at the counter as she was purchasing items before the gunfire began, Deputy Commissioner Joel Dales told reporters.

"We have two guys shooting back. While you have a mother and child in the store," he said.

Police: 1 killed, teen injured in Southwest Philadelphia quintuple shooting

FOX 29's Marcus Espinoza has more on a deadly quintuple shooting Friday night in Southwest Philadelphia.

The weekend violence also included a quintuple shooting, a triple shooting and several double shootings, police said.

A 27-year-old man was killed in a north Philadelphia shooting early Saturday and two 17-year-olds were wounded in another pair of north Philadelphia shootings Saturday night, police said. A 41-year-old man was killed in a north Philadelphia stabbing and a man in his 20s was shot to death in south Philadelphia earlier Saturday.

A man in his late 20s to early 30s was killed in a southwest Philadelphia shooting that also wounded four other people Friday night, one critically, police said. A 40-year-old woman was critically injured and two others wounded in a north Philadelphia shooting Friday night.

Late last week, the city passed 300 homicides, prompting the police commissioner, Danielle Outlaw, to condemn "the brazenness with which these assaults are carried out" as "appalling."

"The lack of regard for human life is affecting innocent bystanders and our children are being caught in the crossfire," Outlaw said in a statement that came before the 1-year-old was wounded in the store shootout.
