Vivek Ramaswamy leaves DOGE; expected to run for Ohio governor
The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), created by President Donald Trump to overhaul federal operations, is now solely led by Elon Musk following Vivek Ramaswamy’s departure.
Ramaswamy, 39, is a biotech entrepreneur and rising star in Republican politics. His exit, confirmed by DOGE spokesperson Anna Kelly, comes as he reportedly prepares for a run for Ohio governor.
"Vivek Ramaswamy played a critical role in helping us create DOGE," Kelly said in a statement. "He intends to run for elected office soon, which requires him to remain outside of DOGE, based on the structure announced today. We thank him immensely for his contributions and expect him to play a vital role in making America great again."
The Cincinnati native had previously shown interest in Vice President JD Vance’s vacated Senate seat before Governor Mike DeWine selected Lt. Gov. Jon Husted as Vance’s successor.
What happens to DOGE now?
What's next:
Now under the sole leadership of Elon Musk, DOGE aims to implement Trump’s aggressive second-term agenda. The commission’s mandate includes slashing federal programs, cutting regulations, and reducing government size.
Musk’s dual role as a business mogul leading companies like Tesla and SpaceX has drawn criticism due to potential conflicts of interest. Both companies hold significant government contracts and could benefit from regulatory changes.

Trump has touted DOGE as a cornerstone of his plan to streamline the federal government. However, the commission’s success will hinge on its ability to execute changes without facing major public backlash over cuts to popular programs.
Big picture view:
Ramaswamy’s departure underscores his growing political ambitions and alignment with Trump’s agenda. As Musk takes full control of DOGE, the commission faces the challenge of achieving its cost-cutting goals while navigating ethical concerns and resistance to sweeping reforms.
For Ramaswamy, stepping away from DOGE positions him as a leading contender in Ohio’s 2026 gubernatorial race.
