Wounded Wayne State officer Collin Rose out of surgery, recovering

DETROIT (WJBK) - A Wayne State University officer wounded in a shooting Tuesday night is out of surgery and fighting for his life.

The officer, identified as Collin Rose, 29, is stable and remains in critical condition at Detroit Receiving Hospital. A person of interest has been arrested, and a $5,000 reward has been offered for recovery of the gun in the shooting.

"He is in recovery surrounded by his family; he has a tough road to climb. We just have to see what happens," said Wayne State President, M. Roy Wilson. "We just spoke to the surgeons. They said he is not out of the woods yet. He is stable."

Rose, originally from Kalamazoo, was shot in the head in the Woodbridge area of Detroit while investigating reports of car break-ins in the area. A person of interest, DeAngelo Davis, has been arrested by police but the investigation continues.

"We were not expecting he was going to be able to talk," Wilson said. "Right now we need to wait and see."

The officer, a five-year veteran and canine cop, was shot in the head during a stop at Brainard and Lincoln of Detroit at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday.

Wayne State Police Chief Anthony Holt said Rose was an exemplary officer.

"He is a tremendous officer, very young, very pro-active," Holt said. "He is ingrained with the community, he reaches out to slain officer families all over the country. He is a very caring officer."
