Former 76er Darryl Dawkins, Dies at 58

PHILADELPHIA (WTXF) - Darryl Dawkins, a former Philadelphia 76er died Wednesday at the age of 58.

A source close to the family confirmed Dawkin's death to FOX 29 early Wednesday afternoon.

Dawkins played in the NBA for 15 years as a center for both the Sixers and New Jersey Nets. Over that span, Dawkins became known for his powerful, backboard-shattering slam dunks.

Musician Stevie Wonder gave Dawkins the nickname "Chocolate Thunder" during his playing career.

Dawkins made the Lehigh Valley his home after he retired from basketball, and even served as the head coach of the Lehigh Carbon Community College Men's Basketball Team.
