It's official: Phillies decline Ryan Howard's club option for 2017

PHILADELPHIA (WTXF) - The Phillies announced something not unexpected concerning Ryan Howard.

Howard played his farewell game with the Phillies on Oct. 2 and was treated to standing ovations.

The Phillies drafted Howard way back in 2001 as a fifth round pick. He played first base with the team for his entire career.

He was awarded the 2006 National League MVP and was the last player remaining from the 2008 World Series championship team.

Howard was honored during his last game in a pregame ceremony. He thanked fans and the organization, and saluted teammates in an emotional speech.

The Phillies had planned to pay Howard a $10 million buyout instead of exercising a $23 million club option for 2017.

Morton joined the Phillies this past year after playing several years for Pittsburgh, but his rookie season was with Atlanta. The pitcher had been on the 60-day disabled list.

Also, the team announced three pitchers have been reinstated from the 60-day disabled list.
