South Philly residents are sounding off after the Philadelphia 76ers announced they are abandoning the $1.3 billion plans to create an arena in Center City, moving the Sixers into a new arena in South Philly.

A sudden change of plans will keep the Sixers in South Philadelphia as city officials gathered Monday to praise the team's unexpected decision to abandon their Center City arena proposal to become part of a new partnership.

In a shocking decision, sources say the Sixers have decided to abandon plans to build a new Sixers arena in Center City, opting to stay in South Philadelphia.

Philadelphia City Councilwoman Jamie Gauthier said she believes the Sixers “owe the city an apology" after they suddenly ditched plans to build a new arena in Center City following years of contentious debate. 

A two-time NBA scoring champion, Embiid was powerless to help the Sixers again after he missed his third straight game with a sprained left foot. Embiid has played in just 13 games this season. The Sixers are 7-6 with Embiid and 8-15 without him.

Joel Embiid, Paul George, Kyle Lowry and Andre Drummond all sat out for Philadelphia while Washington played without leading scorer Jordan Poole and Malcolm Brogdon.

Joel Embiid had 28 points and 12 rebounds, and the Philadelphia 76ers beat the Brooklyn Nets 123-94. Tyrese Maxey added 18 points and Paul George and Caleb Martin each had 17 for the 76ers, who snapped a two-game losing streak.

Embiid had 18 points and six rebounds in the first half, and he finished 4 of 5 from 3-point range in the game. He hit four free throws to clinch the game in the final minutes.
