Watch: Massive sinkhole collapses in North Philly moments after SEPTA bus rolls over it
PHILADELPHIA - A huge sinkhole in the middle of a North Philadelphia street is causing quite a stir.
FOX 29 obtained surveillance footage from a business in the area showing the moments that led up to the sinkhole collapse.
One video shows a SEPTA bus rolling down 6th Street between Erie and Rising Sun. As the 20,000-lb. bus heads down the road, it partially dips into the ground with the sinkhole before trekking past the dip.
Seven minutes later, the next video shows the moment the sinkhole collapsed. Residents on the street exited their homes to assess the damage.
Many bystanders started recording video as they noticed the cracks on the road widening and the road surface sinking.
"It was like a big boom, like a muffled mushroom cloud kind of sound," said Eli Hernandez, 6th Street resident.
The sinkhole drew lots of attention from onlookers and eventually the Philadelphia Water Department.
On Friday, a water pipe that appeared newly repaired and was propped up by pieces of wood.
Monday, FOX 29 saw a crane that had arrived and steel beams placed across the hole with straps supporting the water pipe.
Residents and business owners say they were only without water that Sunday and had service the next day.
The Philadelphia Water Department sent the following update to FOX 29 Monday night:
"PWD repaired a water main at the location. Next steps for our team include inspecting the sewer and working with other utilities and partners to restore the road. As the work continues, the 3700 block of North 6th street remains closed to traffic between Hunting Park and Erie Avenue. Residents will be informed as work proceeds."
This is an ongoing incident.
