Mural honoring George Floyd vandalized in Olney
PHILADELPHIA - A mural of George Floyd in Philadelphia's Olney neighborhood was defaced with white nationalist graffiti on Friday, authorities said.
The mural was commissioned by the North 5th Street Revitalization Project. The community group believes the vandalism occurred sometime overnight.
White paint and the logos and insignia of a white supremacist group covered most of the mural, which was painted on a newsstand.
Floyd, who was Black, died last year after a white Minneapolis police officer, Derek Chauvin, knelt on his neck, pinning him to the ground for about 9 1/2 minutes as Floyd pleaded for air. Floyd’s death sparked worldwide protests and calls for change in policing in the U.S.
Chauvin was fired after Floyd died and was later convicted of murder and manslaughter in his death.
