NJSP Cracking Down on intoxicated driving with checkpoints

NEW JERSEY (WTXF) - New Jersey State Police are cracking down on intoxicated driving this summer.

Unfortunately, the number of alcohol and drug related crashes are still startling even after years of outreach. Starting this weekend the New Jersey State Police will expand their DWI crackdown in hopes that people finally get it and stay off the roads if they've been drinking.

The summer is fast approaching and warm weather partying has begun. Unfortunately with the summer brings far too many instances of drinking and driving

"In New Jersey last year we had 562 fatalities based upon impaired intoxicated or under the influence drivers," Lt. Col. Patrick Callahan explained.

This week the NJ state police launched an expanded plan to combat DWI. Beginning this weekend Officers will be out in force with checkpoints in specific areas and in an unusual twist they're going to tell you the areas they're targeting

"We want the public to be aware that these checkpoints are going to be out there," Lt. Col. Callahan began "And the hope is that modified people's behavior, and has them plan ahead with either a cab ride designated driver, or to just stay home if they intend on drinking."

New Jersey State Police have come up with creative ways of addressing the all too common DWI's. Along with the on the street strategy their Facebook page has become a popular and entertaining way that they engage the public.

Along with additional checkpoints and Facebook outreach the NJ state police also implemented #77, if you see someone who's a danger to others help get them off the road.
