Reward offered for information in shooting death of man at Camden worksite
Camden, NJ (WTXF) The Camden County Prosecutor's Office is offering a $5,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the murder of a man at a Camden worksite back in August. This is in addition to a $10,000 reward being offered by the murder victim's mother.
"Somebody knows something. Somebody seen something," said Rochelle Smith.
The murder of her son is cutting her to the core.
"For somebody to go and shoot him in the head and kill my son it's driving me crazy," she cried.
She got the call in August that someone had shot her 28-year-old son Brett Moss near one of his job's worksites in Camden. Investigators don't know why.
"My son is kind and loving. Anything that anybody needs he was there," said Rochelle.
Brett, who lived in Levittown, worked as a scrap metal collector for a company called EMR and had been assigned to work a yard near 27th and Saunders Street. He'd only been reporting there for two weeks and was alone when Rochelle says someone dragged him out of the sight of security cameras and into an alleyway next to the yard where they shot him. He died at the hospital the very next day.
"The neighbors were elderly and they said he would sit next to them and talk with him when the work load was light. They all loved him. Even his boss said oh my God he was a good kid," said Rochelle. Brett graduated from Kutztown University with a degree in social work. He played football, well enough Rochelle says, to go pro. But an injury sidelined his career before it could really take off.
"He even got picked up by the Jacksonville Jaguars and he got a knee injury," she said. But Rochelle says what her son was most proud of was being a single father to his 8-year old daughter who still doesn't know her dad is gone.
"He took her swimming, he took her everywhere, had birthdays, sat down taught her to read and write. He was a good father. She loved her father. My son was a good boy. I just want whoever did this to be caught because this is wrong what you did to my son," cried Rochelle.
Police released surveillance photos showing a male wearing a baseball cap, white T-shirt and shorts leaving the area on foot. Additional photos show a dark blue Ford Fusion in the area around the time of the shooting.
