Snowy Super Saturday for shoppers

Snow, sleet, slush-covered roadways were packed with plows and salt trucks Saturday morning to help drivers maneuver the messy streets and take part in an historic shopping day: Super Saturday.

Shopper Ebony Ballard says, "This is probably the best time to come, because people didn't want to brave these elements."

Joe April of Conshohocken, Pa. added, "[It's] a little slushy, but I have four-wheel drive, so that helped. If I didn't have four-wheel drive, I'd probably have stayed home to be honest with you."

Super Saturday marks the final shopping weekend before the Christmas holiday, which, this year, also coincides with Hanukkah. It's also the day that husband and wife, Jason and Maria Tilton, decided to pick for their annual shopping date. These two drove to King of Prussia Mall from central New Jersey to relax and enjoy eachother's company, while looking around and, perhaps, cashing in on some sales.

"I'm not gonna let a little snow stop us from coming out and enjoying our day," says a determined, Jason Tilton.

Altheia Leduc also braved the elements to mark a special moment: 6-year-old Janaya Johnson's birthday. The family was celebrating with a trip to the American Girl store.

"I was driving on Route 42 and I-676 and they were really awful," says Leduc. " If it wasn't for her birthday, I wouldn't be out here!"

Perhaps, this morning's wintry mix barred big crowds from bum-rushing KOP Mall when it opened at 8 a.m. While Santa stayed busy taking wishlists from little ones, traffic overall was rather light, the way these shoppers say they like it.

Monique Brycki, of Manayunk, explains, "I have a baby at home. She woke me up early so I figured I'd might as well beat the rush!"

Ebony Ballard agreed: "My game plan was to get here and tackle the stores before everyone else gets here."

KOP Mall is open until 11 p.m. Saturday night. Other area malls will close between 10 p.m. and midnight. Check your local stores for specifics and good luck if you plan to head out and tackle your holiday list this evening.
