Philly road conditions: Speed limits restored on slick Pennsylvania roads, highways
PHILADELPHIA - Speed restrictions that were in place during overnight snowfall to help motorists safely navigate slush-covered roads have been lifted, PennDOT said Tuesday.
The restrictions capped speeds at 45 MPH on most Pennsylvania highways overnight, and commercial vehicles were required to travel in the rightmost lane.
PennDOT said crews will continue to treat the roadways during and after the storm, which forecasters believe will wrap up sometime in the early afternoon.
Transportation officials have asked motorists to maintain an extra following distance while roads remain hazardous, and to be mindful of plows and treatment trucks.
Before Monday night's blast of winter weather, Philadelphia drivers hadn't had to brave snow-covered roads in nearly two years.
Forecasters estimate that Philadelphia and surrounding areas saw 1-3 inches of powder between Monday night and Tuesday morning.
With slushy snow coating the ground, the concern now becomes plummeting temperatures that could cause a deep freeze and further make treacherous travel.
